This is the message carried by the 2008 Cool Earth Relay team:
We the undersigned, participants in the Cool Earth Relay, have collectively run 62.4 miles from Bloomington to Indianapolis carrying this message about the urgency of meaningful action in the face of global climate change:
In Indiana, 96% of our electricity comes from coal-fired power plants. Coal burning emits carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas that contributes to our planet’s warming.
We are committed to Indiana’s transformation from the nation’s highest per capita emissions of greenhouse gasses to a clean and green state by 2016.
Hoosiers can do this because we, like other Americans, are people of ingenuity, energy, and commitment to the well being of our communities and our neighbors.
We call upon all Hoosiers to find ways to reduce our energy needs; to switch to clean, renewable energy sources; to cut waste and inefficiency; to invest in green jobs; to take personal and community-wide actions to transform our economy, transportation, and patterns of consumption.
Preserve our Planet.
Pass it On.
