Cool Earth Relay has joined with Valley Watch of southern Indiana in calling for "20 x 10." That is, we are encouraging people to commit to reducing their energy consumption by 20% by 2010.
That may sound ambitious, but then again you may be surprised how much you can cut your energy use just by being conscious of your consumption and looking for ways to quit wasting.
The world's leading scientists warn that we need to cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 80% by 2050 in order to avoid the most catastrophic effects of global warming. But why wait? The first 20 to 50% will be the easiest to cut -- most people can accomplish that much through simple, painless changes. You'll see immediate savings on your energy bills, savings which you can put toward more costly changes you may need to make to accomplish the next 20% cut. Once in the atmosphere, carbon remains there for one hundred years. So whether we conserve now or continue wasting, our actions today have a lasting effect!
Watch this website for carbon-cutting ideas, and commit yourself today to 20x10!
